The vision of broadband for all in Skåne is a public initiative
It is SkåNet’s task to co-ordinate and monitor the expansion of a non-competitive digital infrastructure in the whole of Skåne.
The aim is to boost the conditions for growth and to improve drawing power. The ideas behind the project took shape after a joint initiative by the municipalities in Skåne and Region Skåne. All of the 33 municipalities in Skåne are taking part. SkåNet was formed in 2003, with Region Skåne and the Association of Local Authorities in Skåne as owners.
The aim is that all locations in Skåne with more than 200 inhabitants will be connected to the network, and to use technologies such as wireless broadband to also offer connection to smaller locations and rural areas. The project is based on collaboration between public and private players. Tele2 has been purchased to build, own and operate most of the fibre network, but the network is open to all players on equal terms.
